NAIROBI COMMUTER RAIL SERVICE
The Commuter Rail Services were introduced in Nairobi in May 1992 as a result of a series of Matatu strikes which crippled commuter services in the city.
5 commuter routes are operational as follows: –
- Nairobi – Embakasi Village (13km)- 10 coaches (2 round trips)
- Nairobi- Syokimau (16Km)
- Nairobi – Ruiru (36Km)
- Nairobi – Kahawa (29 Km
- Nairobi – Kikuyu (30 Km
- Nairobi- SGR LINK (Nairobi Terminus)
The Service is a convenient connection to the city center offering a safe, efficient and reliable travel option for the everyday commuter. The service has the following outstanding features:
- Parking space at all the stations to facilitate the ‘Drop & Ride’ and ‘Park & Ride’ feature
- Ample security (CCTV cameras) and lighting
- Advertising space
- Automated ticketing system
- Capacity to handle 30,000 passengers a day
- Comfortable coaches
