Did you know that livestock is part of freight transported by KR? KR has revolutionized livestock transportation in Kenya by providing a reliable and cost effective means of transporting cattle by rail.
Since reintroduction of livestock rail transport services last year, KR has transported thousands of cattle mostly during the drought season where farmers were relocating the livestock in search of greener pastures. Given the long rains that recently began, several farmers have once again sought KR services to transport their cattle back to their home area.
On April 6, 2023, KR transported approximately 850 heads of cattle as well as goats on a train made up of 17 cattle wagons from Kibwezi town in Makueni County. The cattle were destined for Kitengela, Athi River, Emali and Sultan Hamud.
You might ask yourself if the wagons are conducive for the livestock. Well, the wagons have been specially designed to transport animals as they are partitioned into two compartments to accommodate animals comfortably without lumping too many animals in one carriage. The wagon floor is grooved which prevents livestock from slipping and sliding while enroute which could hurt the animals.
In the past, KR has loaded as well as offloaded cattle and goats at the Nanyuki, Mariakani, Samburu, Mtito Andei, Kibwezi, Makindu, Emali, Sultan Hamud, Stony Athi, Embakasi (Syokimau), Longonot, Gilgil, Nakuru town & Rongai in Nakuru and Njoro stations. Now you are in the know!
