On December 7, 2020, CS Transport Mr. James Macharia commissioned the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Railway Link Service targeting customers traveling to and from the airport. The Nairobi Commuter Rail – Bus Rapid Transport will complement each other with the rail service offering a transport solution that will go a long way in addressing the challenge of gridlocks on the roads around the city.

The service will entail a ride on the Diesel Multiple Unit train from the Nairobi Central Station to Embakasi Village and a bus ride in to the airport. The approximate route length is 61.35km.

Speaking at the event, the CS MOTIHUD Mr. James Macharia said that besides decongesting the roads around the city, both developments will enhance the ease of doing business within the city. He continued to say that he was confident that the only way to deal with congestion on our roads is through introduction of smart solutions which includes promotion of public transport.

In the same breath, our MD Mr. Philip Mainga said that the integration of the revitalized Commuter Rail Service with Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system is aimed at bridging the transportation gap linking the Nairobi Central Station as the nerve center to other estates.

“The regular Train and Bus service will ensure a safe and cost effective means of transport that saves time by avoiding traffic jams usually experienced on the roads leading to JKIA. The service operation period will be between 0545hrs to 2100hrs. The buses have a capacity of 52-80 passengers (seated and standing)”, he said.

Customers of the JKIA Express service will enjoy the use of the Airport South Road and will be picked and dropped off at the cargo area and at the JKIA Central Square. The service targets users of the Airport e.g. workers and travelers.
