A new way to move vehicles between Mombasa and Nairobi!

Kenya Railways has taken another significant step in expanding its freight services with the introduction of its first-ever vehicle haulage service, offering motorists and vehicle importers a safer, faster and more efficient way to transport vehicles between Mombasa and Nairobi.

The inaugural train departed the Port of Mombasa on October 29th 2026 and arrived at the Inland Container Depot, Embakasi, within eight hours, carrying 21 vehicles on four specially fabricated veh carriers, alongside 34 flatbed wagons transporting shipping containers.

Speaking on this milestone, Kenya Railways Managing Director, Mr. Philip J. Mainga, EBS, said:

“The introduction of the car carrier service is an important milestone in our efforts to diversify and strengthen rail freight services. Our target is to transport 700 vehicles per month through this service. Beyond providing a safe, reliable and efficient means of vehicle transportation, the service will contribute to decongesting our roads, reducing road wear and tear and minimising vehicle mileage for our customers. We encourage vehicle importers, manufacturers and members of the public to take advantage of this service.”

By moving vehicles by rail, customers can minimise mileage and unnecessary wear and tear on their vehicles while benefiting from a secure and convenient transportation option. The service will also contribute to reducing the number of vehicles transported over long-distance road corridors, supporting road decongestion and more sustainable freight transportation.

The car carriers accommodate different vehicle makes, including Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Suzuki, Volkswagen, Mazda and Daihatsu, among others. Additional services include insurance, vehicle lashing and securing, and customs processing.

Whether you are a vehicle importer, manufacturer or an individual looking to transport your car, Kenya Railways offers you a convenient alternative.
