Kenya Railways has stepped up efforts to transform Nairobi’s urban mobility and development landscape by convening public and private sector stakeholders to validate plans for the Nairobi Railway City project.
Held at the Railway Training Institute (RTI) on Friday, 16 October 2026, the stakeholder validation workshop brought together key partners to review the Area Action Plans that will guide the development of the 438-acre project located within the Central Business District.
Nairobi Railway City Project Manager, Milly Kiziili, who chaired the workshop, emphasised that the project is designed to benefit all stakeholders and that continued engagement will be critical as implementation progresses. She noted that further consultations will provide an opportunity for stakeholders to contribute ideas that will strengthen the project’s development.
The workshop focused on key components of the project, including Development Control Guidelines, Horizontal Infrastructure and Environmental and Social Governance (ESG) Guidelines, which will provide a framework for coordinated, sustainable and inclusive development.
The Nairobi Railway City masterplan is structured around six precincts covering the West Core, Central Station Front and Back, Market Core and enhanced trading opportunities, Affordable Sustainable Housing, and the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE) precinct. The Affordable Sustainable Housing precinct is the largest, covering approximately 112 acres.
A major focus of the project is to integrate commuter rail, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Light Rail Transit (LRT) and non-motorised transport, creating seamless connections while reducing congestion in Nairobi’s Central Business District.
The project is expected to unlock opportunities for investment, business and employment while promoting climate-resilient urban development and improving access to public transport.
Through continued stakeholder engagement, Kenya Railways is working to ensure that Nairobi Railway City responds to the needs of residents, businesses, investors and other partners, positioning rail and integrated public transport at the centre of Nairobi’s future growth.
Kizili was also accompanied by representatives from Kenya Railways’ Engineering and Technical Services Department, KPMG East Africa and other stakeholders, who provided technical input during the discussions.
