Kenya Railways has commenced the preparatory activities for the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Phase 2B and 2C. The SGR Phase 2B line is a national government infrastructure project starting from Naivasha to Kisumu a distance of 262KM with a proposed branch line of 8.9KM to the New Kisumu Port. It will traverse through Narok, Bomet, Kericho, Nyamira and Kisumu Counties.
SGR Phase 2C starts from Kisumu to Malaba covering a distance of 107KM traversing through Kisumu, Vihiga, Siaya, Kakakmega and Busia Counties.
Kenya Railways through its consultant Apec Consortium Limited has begun the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP) study for Phase 2B. This kicked off by Kenya Railways team and Apec Consortium making a courtesy visit to the County Commissioner Narok County Mr. Kipkech Lotiatia on November 18, 2024.
A consultative meeting between Kenya Railways team, Deputy Governor for Narok County Mr. Tamalinye Koech, Narok County Commissioner Mr. Kipkech Lotiatia and several County Executives was held regarding the extension of the SGR Phase 2B.
During the meeting, Kenya Railways’ General Manager Engineering and Technical Services Department, Eng. Tobias Otieno shed light on further details of the project fostering greater understanding between the National and County Government representatives who will help in community engagement, public participation, and project implementation.
A site kick-off meeting was also held at Omurtoto area, the end point of SGR Phase 2A near Duka Moja. During the meeting, the County Commissioner Mr. Lotiatia thanked the residents for supporting the project. “I am confident that we will continue supporting the project because it will benefit us, as residents of Narok County,” he said during the meeting.
Speaking at the same forum Kenya Railways’ General Manager Engineering and Technical Services Department, Eng. Tobias Otieno thanked the residents for not interfering with the project. Eng. Tobias assured them that Kenya Railways will work with the residents, the area leaders, and other government agencies to ensure matters of land compensation are handled properly.
