Construction of the Nairobi Railway City is set to commence following the groundbreaking of the project by H.E Hon William Samoei Ruto on Wednesday December 8, 2022 at the Nairobi Central Railway station.

The Nairobi Railway City is an iconic multi-modal urban development situated within 425 acres between Haile Sellasie Avenue, Uhuru Highway, Landhies Road and Bunyala Road. The proposed City seeks to expand and decongest the City’s Central Business District.

The Project will occupy 425 acres of prime land within the Central Business District (CBD) of Nairobi. A vast majority of this land is owned by Kenya Railways, Kenya Railways Staff Retirement Benefit Scheme (KRSRBS) and other Government Agencies.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony, President William Ruto said the first phase of the Nairobi Railway City will also involve construction of 10,000 houses on 40 acres of the development.

“This development will significantly contribute to our plan to deliver 250,000 affordable urban housing units annually,” Dr Ruto said.

Designed by British architects, the Nairobi Railway City will be implemented in phases with the first phase proposed for completion by the year 2030.

The Nairobi, Railway City design is fully aligned to the Nairobi Integrated Master Plan, the Nairobi Transport Master Plan and the Nairobi Commuter Rail Master Plan and also provides for non-Motorised Transport corridors in every precinct of the development allowing for easy movement of pedestrians.

The Nairobi Railway City will also include an expanded Central Station, new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lines and stations as well as revamped matatu termini that will allow Nairobians clear transit pathways.

On his part, the United Kingdom Foreign Secretary Mr. John Cleverly said that implementation of the project incorporates new technology that will ensure conformity with climate conservation efforts while at the same time giving a product that will enable Nairobians carry out their business with ease and utilize wellness and recreation centres within the City.
