Kisumu branch line takes off from the mainline at Nakuru railway station. The total length of the branch line is 216.7 kilometers. There are eighteen (18) stations within the network.
There are eighteen (18) stations within the network namely:-Nakuru KM [0], Njoro [KM 19.6], Elburgon [KM 40.6], Turi [KM 49.48], Molo [KM 56.68], Mau Summit [KM 68.3], Londiani [KM 81.8], Kedowa [KM 95.16], Kipkelion [KM 110.8], Tunnel [KM 129.75], Fort Ternan [KM 139.85],Koru [KM 151.2], Muhoroni [KM 161.53], Chemelil [KM 173.0], Kibigori [KM 180.85], Miwani [KM 188.10], Kibos [KM 207.4] and Kisumu [KM 216.73] .
PROJECT SCOPE
In order to resume operations on the branch line, there is need to undertake major rehabilitation of the line. Rehabilitation involves the following key activities.
- Track rehabilitation activities include the following: –
- Bush clearing
- Ballast screening
- Geometry correction
- Drainage correction
- Track renewal (Replacement of railway superstructure)
- Ballasting
- Through packing
- Bridge and viaduct strengthening
- Formation repair
- Culverts construction
2. Installation of signaling and communication/train control systems
