Passenger train services on the Nairobi-Kisumu Meter Gauge line resumed on 17th December 2021 after more than a decade, offering an alternative mode of transportation for travelers hailing from Nyanza and Western Kenya regions.

The refurbished railway line will come in handy during the 2021 festive period with thousands of Kenyans known t prefer travelling at this time in order to spend the holidays with their loved ones. It will also ease the transportation of cargo from Mombasa to Nairobi, Kisumu and Butere. In addition, passengers traveling to these regions will have an opportunity to use the relatively cheaper trains.

The Nairobi-Kisumu train will be leaving the Nairobi Central station for Kisumu at 6:00 am every Friday. The train will be making the return trip on Sundays from the New Kisumu station located in the Lake Side City’s Industrial area along the Kisumu Busia Road.

A first-class ticket goes for Ksh 2000 while an economy class ticket goes for Ksh 600. Tickets are on sale at the Nairobi Central station, Nakuru Railway station and the New Kisumu Railway station. New stops along the route will be introduced in due course and the train will be making 18 stops at the various stations along the railway corridor.

Commuters can reserve their seats by contacting 0115102558/011516959. Passengers who travel from Nairobi to Nakuru County will pay Ksh 300 en route to Kisumu.  The train has a Restaurant Car and passengers can purchase a meal during the 11-hour journey.

Kenya Railways will soon extend the service all the way to Butere town with the revitalization process for the section between Kisumu and Butere at an advanced stage.
