What comes to your mind when you hear about a marathon? I bet most of you think of Eliud Kipchoge or Faith Kipyegon and to be honest, that is not right! Anyone can participate in a marathon and that is why this year, Kenya Railways sponsored twenty-two staff members to participate in the 20th edition of the Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon. The Corporation’s participation in the marathon aligned with the fifth pillar of the KR culture change program which focuses on staff wellbeing. The marathon was held on Sunday October 29, 2023 along the picturesque Southern Bypass.

This year’s event drew over twenty thousand participants of all ages, backgrounds, seasoned athletes, first-time runners; uniting people from all walks of life in the spirit of fitness, charity, and community. It also showcased the Corporation’s dedication to not only excelling in the transport sector but also making a positive impact on society.

The marathon provided a platform for countless personal triumphs and inspirational stories. Jane Vuligwa, the Acting General Manager Supply Chain could not hide her joy after completing the 21 kilometer half marathon. She was proud of herself for breaking a personal record and just enjoying the thrill of the run, for sure, the event will forever hold a special place in her heart.

The participating team said they were not stopping at this one marathon. It is their hope that the Corporation will commit to continuing its support for such events that promote health, well-being, and a sense of togetherness. As we reflect on this year’s event, it’s clear that the StanChart Marathon will remain a cherished tradition that brings KR staff together for years to come.

Kudos to team KR for doing their best and making Kenya Railways proud!
