Kenya Railways efforts to reinvent public transport in Nairobi City are bearing fruit following a huge turnout by commuters seeking to utilize the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service. This is following the recent commissioning of the modernized Nairobi Commuter Rail Service by H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta.

The service now boasts of an increased frequency of the trains to Embakasi Village and Syokimau areas from the Nairobi Central station. There are now have six round trips between the Nairobi Central station and the two stations. In addition,  the Nairobi Commuter Rail bus service picks customers from the station to Upperhill, Yaya Centre and Westlands areas.The Service also entails the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Express service is dedicated service which offers a seamless connection via rail and bus into and out of the airport will commence operations soon.

Customers who intend to travel out of the country can now opt for the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service – JKIA Express service and get to the airport in time. This group of customers can board the train at the Nairobi Central station, alight at Embakasi Village station and take the bus in to the airport at Kes 250.

The JKIA Express service will see customers picked and dropped at the cargo area and passenger terminal. The JKIA Express service has been pegged on the scheduled to arrive in time for customers to catch commercial flights.

A ride on the newly acquired Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs) costs Kes. 100 to each destination and a ride on the Commuter Rail bus to all destinations costs Kes 50.

The development is a positive addition for the daily commuter especially those plying the Syokimau route because Mombasa Road is currently experiencing congestion due to the construction of the Express Way.
