As part of Kenya Red Cross’ 60-year anniversary, the organization partnered with other agencies to carry out a major multi-stakeholder simulation exercise. The exercise which aimed at strengthening Kenya’s emergency response tested multi-agency coordination, incident command, and hospital surge capacity during a mass casualty incident.
The simulation exercise mimicked an accidents scenario at the intersection of a railway line and a major road. The teams met at the Railway Level Crossing in Embakasi Village and enacted various accident scenario that can occur at such a point and showcased appropriate response scenarios.
The simulation exercise also served as a key safety initiative, which is aimed at raising public awareness on the proper safety protocols, where motorists and pedestrians must follow when approaching and using railway level crossings.
The other partner agencies included the National Disaster Management Unit, National Disaster Operations Centre, Kenya Red Cross Society, National Police Service, Kenya Defence Forces, Ministry of Health, Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya National Highways Authority, National Transport and Safety Authority, Kenya Power & Lighting Company, Kenya Airports Authority, the National Youth Service, and St. John Ambulance.
