Kenya Railways joined hands with the Kenya Forest Service for a tree planting activity on Friday June 25, 2022 as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility activities for the financial year 2021-2022. The two institutions collaborated in growing 5,000 seedlings over 5 hectares within the Eburu Forest in Naivasha town.

Speaking during the exercise, Ms. Susan Emitundo of the Infrastructure department underscored the nexus between infrastructural development and the environment noting that the Corporation has embraced restoring the environment affected by rail infrastructure development in order to safeguard it against the effects of degradation.

On his part, the Naivasha Conservator of Forests Mr. Sam Langat noted the importance of tree growing as one pillar supporting economic and social development. He cautioned the local community against forest destruction noting that it was responsible for the disappearance of some indigenous plant species as well rivers and springs that are crucial for their survival.

Also in attendance were representatives of the Community Forest associations (CFA) who participated in the tree planting exercise at the invitation of Mr. Sam Langat. While applauding Kenya Railways for the gesture, the Morop Forest Association Mr. Lukadi said that tree planting will have a positive impact on Eburu Forest and the tree cover of Kenya. He further reiterated that planting the seedlings should not signify the en of the engagement and called on Kenya Railways to work closely with the Eburu Forest station and the local CFAs in ensuring 100 per cent survival of the seedlings.
