SGR: Relocation Action Plan for Phase 2A Underway

Members of the public whose homes and properties lie along the corridor of the Nairobi to Naivasha Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project will soon be called upon to relocate in order to pave way for the construction of the line. This follows the commencement of the Relocation Action Plan process which kicked off on January 9, 2017.

According to the Social Environmentalist Assistant Ms. Stella Ndiwa, Kenya Railways has contracted Ecoplan Management Ltd and Earthscope Survey Services to provide consultancy services for the preparation of a Resettlement Action Plan for the Phase 2A of the Standard Gauge Railway project. The process involves preparing through a consultative process, the projects Potential Impacts and Mitigation Mechanisms, carrying out a census of the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) along the project’s corridor, determine the socio-economic characteristics of the PAPs and develop an inventory of the affected assets.

The main objective of the consultancy is to provide an acceptable plan for the resettlement and compensation of persons affected by the land acquisition process. The scope of works for the consultancy entails undertaking a detailed desktop review of project literature, identifying the actual land owners, sizes and properties affected, develop a resettlement action plan and develop a monitoring plan for the project.

Phase 2A of the Standard Gauge Railway runs across parts of Nairobi, Kajiado, Kiambu, Nakuru and Narok counties and covers a distance of 120 kilometres. For this section of the project, the length of the subgrade will be 87.98 kilometres which accounts for 73.3 per cent of the project’s total length, the length of the bridgeworks is 23.96 kilometres accounting for 20 per cent of the projects total length and the length of the tunnels is 7.756 kilometres accounting for 6.7 per cent of the project’s total length.
