On October 10, 2025, the Principal Secretary for Transport, Mr. Mohamed Daghar, CBS, spearheaded Mazingira Day 2025 celebrations at MM Shah Primary School, Mbeheni Girls Comprehensive School and Miritini Railway Station where he led a tree planting exercise. The excercise was held specifically to mark Mazingira Day where the government has identified October 10, as a national tree-planting day for all Kenyans. The initiative is geared towards increasing Kenyas forest cover by planting 15 Billion seedlings by 2032.

Speaking during the event, Mr. Daghar urged those present to actively participate in the Government’s transformative agenda.

On his part, Kenya Railways Managing Director Mr. Philip Mainga, EBS informed those present that the corporation has embraced the call to plant trees and has been doing so in various parts of the country.

In the 2024/2025 financial year, Kenya Railways planted over 90,000 tree seedlings across the country in Dongo Kundu, Mombasa and Gembe Hills, in Homabay County — an ambitious milestone aimed at combating climate change and restoring degraded ecosystems Building on that success, the Corporation also plans to plant more than 80,000 tree seedlings in the 2025/2026 financial Year, aligning its activities with Mazingira Day and Kenya’s broader reforestation goals.

The activities highlights the government’s commitment to environmental conservation and align with President William Ruto’s national goal of growing 15 billion trees by 2032, an initiative aimed at restoring ecosystems, mitigating climate change, and securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
