A delegation from the Kenya National Assembly’s Transport and Infrastructure Committee, spearheaded by Member of Parliament Hon. George Kariuki, embarked on an insightful visit to the Kenya Railways Headquarters on Thursday, March 7th, 2024. The primary objective of the visit was to glean invaluable insights into the operations of Kenya Railways, a vital component of the nation’s transportation network.

Welcomed by the Kenya Railways Managing Director, Mr. Philip J. Mainga, EBS, the committee delved into a comprehensive briefing on the illustrious journey of Kenya Railways since its establishment in 1977. The esteemed members of the committee present included Hon. Samuel Arama, Hon. Bady Twalib, Hon. Tom Kajwang, Hon. Johnson Manya, Hon. Abdul Rahim Dawood, Hon. John Kairu, Hon. Weytan Mohamed, and Hon. Jhanda Zaheer.

Throughout the visit, they were enlightened on the symbiotic relationship between the Meter Gauge Railway and the Standard Gauge Railway, both instrumental in delivering efficient and dependable transportation solutions.

A highlight of the visit was the exploration of key Kenya Railways facilities, notably the Kenya Railways Workshop and the Numerical Machining Complex (NMC). The workshop, comprising various ‘Shops’, was showcased for its diverse engineering activities, including the refurbishment and rehabilitation of Kenya Railways rolling stock.

Additionally, the Committee had the privilege of touring the Numerical Machining Complex, renowned for its ground-breaking accomplishments, such as the fabrication of the locally made vehicle, Nyayo 1. Furthermore, the NMC manufactures a myriad of appliances and spare parts, further bolstering Kenya’s engineering capabilities and contributing to the nation’s economic advancement.

In light of the visit, the Committee expressed profound appreciation for the concerted efforts invested in leveraging these facilities to meet Kenya’s engineering demands, thus fostering sustainable economic growth. The visit not only underscored the pivotal role of Kenya Railways in the nation’s development trajectory but also reaffirmed the commitment of stakeholders towards advancing Kenya’s transportation and infrastructure landscape.
