Cabinet Secretary for Roads and  Transport, Kipchumba Murkomen, on February 5, 2024 flagged off 50 new wagons at the Port Reitz Freight Station, significantly boosting the Madaraka Express Freight Services.

The acquisition of the new wagons is part of our commitment to enhance Freight Services, providing more efficient and reliable transportation solutions for cargo, as well as meet the ever increasing demand for higher capacity cargo transport options in the country and the Great Lakes region at large.

Speaking during the event, the Cabinet Secretary expressed enthusiasm about the development, stating that the government is committed to providing efficient solutions for the transport and logistics sector. Noting that rail is a critical installation in the transport and logistics scene, he affirmed that the next ten years will see significant undertakings to equip the rail sector to play its role effectively.

“The acquisition of these 50 new wagons is a pivotal moment for our nation’s transportation sector. It reflects our dedication to improving logistics and trade facilitation, promoting economic development, and ensuring a seamless flow of goods via rail. This investment aligns with our vision for a robust and modern transport system that supports Kenya’s continued growth,” he said.

Speaking during the event, Managing Director, Mr. Philip J. Mainga EBS said that the Corporation under its current Strategic Plan, intends to tremendously increase the rail market share of the port throughput in the next five years.

“This milestone underscores our dedication to ensuring that the Madaraka Express Freight Services continues to meet and exceed the expectations of the business community both locally and internationally. The expansion of our fleet will significantly bolster our capacity to handle increased cargo demands.

Kenya Railways currently offers freight transport on both the Metre Gauge and Standard Gauge Railway networks, serving the neighboring countries of Uganda, Rwanda , South Sudan and Burundi
