The Government of Kenya (GoK) in partnership with the World Bank intends to finance the implementation of the Kenya Urban Mobility Improvement Project (KUMIP).
The project objective is to improve urban mobility within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area and land use planning along the identified commuter corridors. The project will support urban policy formulation, institutional strengthening, and improvement of commuter rail services, station access roads and transit-oriented development (TOD) around railway stations.
The key project activities will include:-
- Development of Nairobi Central Station – Thika Commuter Line.
- Electrification of the Nairobi Commuter Railway Network.
- Acquisition of Trainsets (Electric Multiple units and Diesel Electric Multiple Units).
- Planning and development of Transit Oriented Developments along the Nairobi Central Station – Thika Commuter Corridor.
- Development and equipping of maintenance workshops for Electric Multiple Units and Diesel Electric Multiple Units.
- Development of manufacturing unit for rolling stock spare parts and permanent way fittings and fasteners.
- Construction of prioritized access roads to the commuter railway stations including required multi-modal transfer facilities.
- Construction of Likoni Road over Railway Bridge and the associated road approaches.
- Development of concrete sleeper manufacturing plant.
- Acquisition of maintenance rolling stock (locomotive, ballast hopper wagons, low sided wagons)
Kenya Railways Corporation in conjunction with other implementing agencies and County Governments within the Nairobi Metropolitan Area will spearhead the implementation of the project activities.
The procurement of the project activities will follow the World Bank Procurement Regulations for Investment Projects Financing (IPF) Borrowers.
To this end, Kenya Railways Corporation hereby invites interested private sector stakeholders and industry players to a consultative meeting on 24th June 2026 at Railway Training Institute, South B, Nairobi from 0900am to 1300hrs Eastern African Time (EАТ).
The objectives of the meeting are to;
- Relay general information on the project to private sector stakeholders,
- Present details of expected procurement packages and implementing arrangements,
- Obtain feedback from the potential vendors regarding suitability and sustainability of the proposed project design.
- Obtain feedback on the proposed procurement approaches and Borrower’s PPSD findings/perceptions
- Obtain indicative current prices, pricing methods and other factors influencing price
- Obtain feedback on mmarket trends and regional differences (including other major procurements they are considering bidding for which may impact capacity etc.)
- Obtain feedback on availability of alternative goods and services (product differentiation);
- Obtain feedback on any current or potentially innovative developments or new technologies in the market; and
- Obtain feedback on common or prevalent risks within the supply chain(s).
The consultation will also serve as a market sounding exercise to obtain industry feedback for the preparation of Project Procurement Strategy.
Sstakeholders are strongly encouraged to participate in this process and to use the meeting as an opportunity to ask questions and provide comments regarding this upcoming project procurement opportunity.
