In line with the Government’s goal to increase tree cover from 12% to 30% and restore 5.1 million hectares of degraded land, Kenya Railways fraternity planted 30,000 tree seedlings at Gembe Hills, Homa Bay County 20,000 seedlings in Dongo Kundu, Mombasa -1,000 seedlings at the Kenya Railways Old Station, Mombasa on 3rd April 2025. 

Kenya Railways Managing Director, Mr. Philip J. Mainga, spearheaded the exercise, along with board members and senior management, demonstrating KR’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability. 

Speaking during the exercise, Mr. Mainga urged staff members to plant and nurture the seedlings until maturity, emphasizing the role of tree planting in preserving the environment and mitigating climate change. He further reiterated that planting a seedling goes a long way in preserving the environment and minimizing the adverse effects of climate change.

With the leadership of KR Board of Directors and Senior Management, Kenya Railways took an active role in ensuring that this impactful exercise contributes to a greener, more sustain- able Kenya.

On December 22nd 2022, the government, launched a campaign to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 to address deforestation, reduce greenhouse emissions, and restore degraded land- scapes.
