Colleagues from across the Security Service Division gathered on 28 November 2025 to celebrate the retirement of a man whose name has become synonymous with loyalty at Kenya Railways. After 35 years of distinguished service, Mr. Oluoch’s farewell was not merely a ceremony—it was a heartfelt tribute to a career defined by integrity, resilience, leadership, and unwavering devotion to the Corporation.
Mr. Oluoch’s journey began in November 1990, when he joined the Security Division and was posted across several regions, including Mombasa, Nakuru, Voi, and Nairobi. Over the decades, he became one of the most dependable officers in the Corporation, earning trust through consistent action, calm judgment, and a strong sense of duty.
His colleagues described him as a man who led by example—steady, principled, and always willing to guide others with humility. Looking back, he admits the path was not easy.
“Kwa kazi, fanya kile ambacho kimekuleta—do what has brought you to work and play your part,” he said during his farewell speech, a principle that shaped his service and inspired those who worked alongside him.
Among the many challenges he faced, the concession period stands out as the most trying. With many Security personnel exiting the Corporation and no replacements coming in, he was tasked with safeguarding vast amounts of property with an overstretched workforce. Yet, through resourcefulness and commitment, he ensured the Corporation’s assets remained secure.
Even earlier in his career—especially during his days in Nakuru—he encountered attempts at bribery. Not once did he give in. “I was not greedy,” he said, crediting integrity as his compass through moments of temptation. His honesty earned him deep respect, both among peers and leadership.
Despite the hardships, his career also offered memorable opportunities. One of the highlights was being selected by the Corporation for a visit to China—an experience he describes as a privilege that broadened his worldview. He also remembered the early 1990s when many of the workers he supervised had limited formal education, making communication difficult. Patience, he said, became one of his strongest tools, shaping him into a calm, firm, and compassionate leader.
Throughout his service, he ensured Kenya Railways’ property across the KR network was unmatched. His leadership style firm yet fair, principled yet kind made him a favourite among colleagues and seniors. On several occasions, he moved to other departments or took up temporary duties, only to be urgently recalled back because his contribution was simply irreplaceable. His presence brought stability, his guidance brought clarity, and his character inspired excellence.
His advice to officers remains simple yet profound: “Be loyal, trustworthy, and faithful.”
He encouraged them to believe in themselves, to work diligently, to seek guidance when needed, and to maintain respect for seniors without fear. As he steps into retirement, he hopes to start a business to keep himself active, and says he would gladly consider returning to the organisation if the opportunity ever arose—a testament to how deeply he cares for KR.
Loved by many and admired by all who worked with him, Mr. Oluoch leaves behind a legacy measured not only in years of service, but in character, courage, and the countless lives he touched. His story reminds us that true service is rooted in integrity and carried forward through dedication.
May his retirement be fulfilling, and may his journey continue to inspire the generations to come.
