On December 21, 2017, a team of KR staff members visited New Life Home Trust as part of the Corporation’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. The visit saw the home receive a donation worth Kshs 350,000 both in cash and in kind, that will go a long way in progressing the home’s agenda of rescuing and caring for children.
New Life Home Trust’s vision is to provide compassionate support to the plight of abandoned and other extremely vulnerable babies, with priority given to those who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.
From their very first baby back in 1994, New Life Home Trust has grown to become a national institution of baby rescue, with branches located as far as Kisumu, Nakuru and Nyeri, with the Kisumu one being the largest housing over 70 children including those with special needs. The Nairobi Home has 50 children ranging from newborns up to three year olds; Nyeri has 25 babies, with Nakuru and Kisumu caring for children as old as 17. By law, a home has to have a minimum of around 25 children in order to be recognized as a charitable children’s home.
Apart from rescuing, caring and placing the children in foster families, the home also strives to place the children in educational institutions that understand the plight of abandoned, mentally challenged or sick children. Relying purely on donor and sponsor support, they are grateful even for the slightest contribution made to them, be it material or even time.
Those who participated in the visit described it as fulfilling and a rich way to give back, especially in this Christmas season. They were able to spend quality time with the different groups of children who were also evidently excited to have the KR team with them.
On behalf of the Home, the Manager, Partner Relations, Mr. Guy Bastable , thanked the Corporation for its contribution, stating that the contributions were way beyond what they’d have hoped for, especially in view of the growing needs they have mainly at the Kisumu Home. “Thank you so, so much for the enormous donation in cash and kind that you and your team have brought. What an incredible start to our Christmas weekend! We are full of gratitude for all your sacrificial gifts,” he said, further wishing the Kenya Railways team a truly blessed Christmas.
