Youth from the slums will get jobs after China Road and Bridge Corporation commenced an initiative to train them.
Stephen Zhao, CRBC’s External Relations and Cooperation Manager while welcoming the new trainees at the Nairobi West Passenger station construction site said that the firm is keen on empowering young people. This will enable them gain skills that make them employable in the railway industry and other technical fields.
“We are glad to welcome you to this programme. CRBC has continually played an active role in the training of young people in this country. We uphold the mantra that one can be an unskilled worker today, and an engineer tomorrow,” he said.
The programme has targeted 30 youth from the slums around the city. China Road and Bridge Corporation is engaging in an extensive training programme. In May, 2015 the firm launched a Technology Transfer Centre
in Voi, Taita Taveta county. At the Institute, the contractor conducted various training sessions for SGR employees at the SGR construction camp.
The Railway Training Institute has been identified as a ‘Centre of training for r excellence. Already training for r qualified local students is in progress. Teaching staff from the Institute have also visited China for short term training sessions under the Training of trainers initiative.
In March, the scholarship programme that aims to produce high end technical and management staff for the country commenced. The programme will see at least 60 students undertake a Bachelor’s degree course in Rail Technology at Beijing Jiatong University in China.
