With work on the second phase of the Standard Gauge Railway taking shape, the Head of State recently took time to inspect the progress thereof accompanied by a slew of top tier State officials. On December 16, 2017, His Excellency Uhuru Kenyatta was received by an inter-organizational team from the National Government, Kenya Railways, China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and the China Railway Development Company / Apec Construction Company Limited / Edon Consortium Limited (CAEC)
The President urged the CCCC, which is working in collaboration with MOTIHUD, to ensure all components of the SGR’s second phase are complete by June 2019 so as to hasten the realization of the Country’s economic goals. The second phase, apart from the Nairobi to Naivasha rail line, also includes establishment of an economic zone in Naivasha which will incentivize business investments in the country.
On his part, the Cabinet Secretary for Ministry of Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development (MOTIHUD), Mr. James Macharia, assured the President that the Ministry was committed to delivering on the remaining section of the project, with the progress of the tunnel being a key highlight. He informed the President that the tunnel had so far attained a 25% level of completion. Spanning a distance of 4.5kms, the Embulbul tunnel is the longest of the three tunnels in the SGR’s second phase.
