Travelers cruising on the Madaraka Express train between Mombasa and Nairobi are now able to pay for their tickets through Safaricom’s M-Pesa platform.
Kenya Railways has been allocated 9 paybill numbers by Safaricom through which customers can buy the tickets from the place of their convenience and retrieve the tickets at the railway station.
Travelers need to call the inquiries office at the Nairobi Terminus and provide their details which include the date of travel, the preferred class, destination and the mobile number. The Ticketing officer will then key in the customers details and inform the customer the amount to be paid while at the same time confirming to the customer the availability of the train and seat number. The customer will then make payment via M-Pesa using the payment details provided and will in turn receive ticket details via Short Message Service (SMS).
On the day of travel, the customers may obtain the ticket at the self-service machines or from the dedicated M-Pesa ticketing window. This is the last process and commuters are expected to proceed to the waiting lobby ready for boarding which takes place five minutes before departure.
Nine paybill numbers have been obtained by the Corporation and each passenger station will have a dedicated paybill number in order to ensure the process is efficient.
