The Madaraka Express Freight Service has experienced an upturn in volumes of cargo transported from the Port of Mombasa in the recent past as a result of a reduction in freight charges earlier in the year The Service operated 788 cargo trains in the June, July and August translating to 75,466 TEUs and 361,614 tonnes of bulk cargo.

This in turn resulted in the Corporation dedicating more resources in terms of locomotives and wagonsdesigned to enable double-stacking of containers in addition to Open Top wagons which were utilized to transport bulk cargo.

The action by the Corporation has been a game changer, coming at a time when the world economy is emerging from the suppressed business activity due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
