Kenya Railways Postpones Inter-county Train Operations on Madaraka Express

Kenya Railways wishes to announce that operations of the Inter-County train service on the Makadara Express will not commence on Saturday, July 1, 2017 as earlier communicated. The Corporation had anticipated that critical technical and operational handover processes would have been completed by now. However, there has been a delay due to the fact that most of the Operator’s (China Road and Bridge Corporation) key staff are arriving now and require time to go through the handover processes. It is expected that we shall conclude the handover processes in the coming weeks and launch the Inter-County train service as soon as possible.

In order to ensure seamless operations, we have deployed teams to address customer care and operational concerns that keep emerging. So far, we have received overwhelming support from our customers, as well as honest and valuable feedback, which we are applying in order to improve on the customer experience as we prepare to commence operations of the Inter-County train. To date we have transported approximately 75,000 passengers on the express train which has been operational for a month now. The passenger numbers are surging daily and we have increased the capacity of the train through introduction of additional coaches on both the trains plying between Mombasa and Nairobi daily.

Kenya Railways and the Madaraka Express train Operator, China Road and Bridge Corporation are working round the clock to ensure the Inter-County train will be in operation soon, to enable residents of Kwale, Taita Taveta, Makueni, Machakos and Kajiado counties enjoy the service too. The new train will make stopovers at the intermediate stations namely Athi River, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito Andei, Voi, Miaseny, and Mariakani.

Kenya Railways wishes to affirm her commitment to delivering on the promises made on the Madaraka Express service. We anticipate that by this slight extension, we shall address any impending issues, and streamline all service areas to ensure a seamless experience for all our passengers plying the nine key locations.

We sincerely regret the inconvenience caused.
