SGR: First Batch of Local Trainees Graduates

The Railway training Institute (RTI) held its first award

ceremony for technical training courses initiated as part of the SGR training programme. 102 students were awarded certificates at a closing ceremony held at the Institute’s graduation grounds on 8th August 2016 having successfully completed the four month programme. The training programme which commenced on April 5, 2016 entailed study in Traffic and Transportation Management; Telecommunications Control Engineering; and Locomotive Maintenance and Rolling Stock Engineering.

 

Cabinet Secretary Transport, Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development, Mr. James Macharia, in a speech read by Principal Secretary for Transport Mr Irungu Nyakera, said the ongoing training is part of the Government’s efforts to ensure there is enough capacity to oversee the operations and management of the railway infrastructure. Kenyans get the requisite skills and training for in the rail sector.

“I am delighted to officiate at today’s ceremony. Our aim as a Government is to build local capacity for operation and maintenance of the railway infrastructure in the country. The training programmes that are ongoing will ensure that Kenyans acquire the requisite skills with a particular focus on design, construction, management and operations for the railway transport sector,” he said.

The CS also disclosed that the government has committed Kshs. 2 billion towards infrastructure upgrade at the Institute which will include equipping workshops with state-of-the-art training equipment in the next financial year. This, he said, will enhance the quality of training.

The training programme was sponsored by China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and was facilitated by nine trainers from the South Western University of Jiatong in China who worked in conjunction with the Railway Training Institute teaching staff.  The students will undertake their internship with the contractor and will be attached at the various offices along the project’s corridor.

Other dignitaries who attended the ceremony include China’s Ambassador to Kenya, Mr. Liu Xianfa, Kenya Railways Board of Directors Chairman Gen. (Rtd) Jeremiah Kianga, Kenya Railways Managing Director Mr. A.K Maina, Kenya Railways and RTI Board of Directors and China Road and Bridges Corporation team.
